saywhut

Today, after eating a bad tuna fish sandwich (it was red, why did I eat it?) from my cafeteria and trying to make myself puke in the toilet during my Macroeconomics break, I realized something.  I'M OFFICIALLY ON SPRING BREAK, yeah yeah YEAH.

aurel schmidt

I think a lot of the downtown NY hipster artists (ie Dan Colen, Nate Lowman) are kind of overrated... I'm not saying they're not artists but I think that there are so many kids in art schools all over the world that are just as talented, but aren't getting paid thousands of dollars for single pieces of artwork. One artist in particular though, Aurel Schmidt, belongs to this set but I actually am fascinated by her work. I feel like it's new and original, which is hard to even fathom because usually everything's been previously done and explored in art.

Aurel is originally from a suburban town in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. She describes it as "white-trash small town where everyone did crystal meth and everyone was a 'wigger.' " She says her father "drove a pickup truck and dirt biked around in the forest listening to classic rock, drinking beer and shooting at animals." Her mother "grew marijuana in the backyard." She recalls that she was "a teenage slut in gold hoop earrings and leopard hot pants blacking out at bonfire parties up in the woods." After moving to Vancouver at 18, she eventually landed in New York City. She is self-taught and abandoned the idea of going to art school.

I love how well-spoken and honest she is about her outlook on things.
In an article in Tokion Magazine she reveals that she wouldn't ever date a guy who wouldn't have sex with her on her period. How's that for interview etiquette.
In her drawings she uses anything from colored pencils to period blood and spit.
